About our club and its members

We are a friendly bunch

About our club and its members

Our name Juliotter is taken from the hall where we meet (Otterham and St Juliot Village Hall).

We’re a friendly organisation sharing our skills and knowledge with each other, united by our love of gardening. It’s a constant challenge to garden in this wild and wonderful part of the country – battered by salt winds and Atlantic gales, often shrouded in mist, and with more than our fair share of rainfall.

Our Gardens

Our gardens represent every size and condition in the area; from neutral to acid soil, right through to dense alkaline clay.

Some have small, manageable gardens around new build homes; others have traditional plots with mature trees that were originally planted in Victorian times; and still others have created large gardens from what was once a field.

Some of us live at sea level, others have made a garden hundreds of feet up on the edge of Bodmin Moor.

Wildlife

Members Garden

Our lanes and woods are ancient and unspoilt and a haven for wild wildlife.

We share our space with badgers, squirrels, rabbits, foxes, and deer as well as all the smaller mammals, birds, butterflies and molluscs.

Though wholly delightful in the pages of Beatrix Potter, each creature brings another headache to the gardener, perhaps especially those of us who like to plant trees, and bulbs or grow our own vegetables.

A warm and friendly welcome

So there you are: it’s windy, wet, salty, exposed, and full of natural predators. It’s a wonder that we continue to garden at all. But we do. And we love meeting each other once a month and simply talking about it. We’re a pretty sociable crowd and enjoy our summer barbecues and winter celebration dinners almost as much as our monthly meetings in the hall. Visitors are sure of a warm and friendly welcome so come and join us either as a guest for the evening or as a new member.
